What Should I Do If I Can’t Find Baby Formula?
If you are unable to obtain your usual infant formula, speak with your pediatrician about the safest alternative.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken steps to help improve the supply of infant and specialty formulas. If you are experiencing difficulty finding formula, visit the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services or the American Academy of Pediatrics for additional guidance.
Why Are Infant Formulas Regulated by the FDA?
The FDA ensures that infant formulas meet strict nutritional requirements necessary for growth and development. This includes verifying appropriate levels of vitamins and minerals and ensuring products are free from harmful contaminants.
What Can Happen If You Make Your Own Formula?
Homemade formulas carry risks of contamination and infection. Incorrect amounts of nutrients can lead to overdose or deficiencies, which may negatively impact a baby’s growth and development.
Why Can’t I Dilute Infant Formula?
Diluting infant formula can result in too much water intake, which may disrupt brain function and cause dangerous electrolyte imbalances.
