What to Do if Someone May Have Been Poisoned

For Any Poison Exposure

  • Stay calm.
  • Call Poison Help right away at 1-800-222-1222.
  • Do not wait for symptoms to appear—experts are available 24/7.

Types of Poison Exposure

  • Swallowed something harmful
  • Got something in the eye or on the skin
  • Breathed in fumes, vapors, or gases

Call 911 First If the Person:

  • Is unconscious or difficult to wake
  • Is having a seizure
  • Is not breathing or struggling to breathe
  • Has chest pain or severe symptoms

Important Safety Information

  • Do not induce vomiting unless specifically instructed by Poison Control.
  • Syrup of Ipecac and activated charcoal are not recommended for home use.
